Do the TVT operations increase risk of urinary tract infections?

Background
Tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) is an anti-incontinence suburethral sling procedure.

Material and methods
The study group consisted of 107 women. Only women with negative urine culture were operated. The follow-up was done after 1 day, 1, 3 and 6 months from the operation. Postoperatively all patients had a midstream urine culture and urinalysis. The organism cultured and antibiotics sensitivity were tabulated. Patients with positive urine culture were treated with antibiotics.

Results
103 (96.3%) women had not any problem with recurrent urinary tract infection after TVT operation. Only 4 of them (3.7%) had recurrent urinary tract infections.
