3/2007The influence of rehabilitation on psychical state and reduction of pain in acute and chronic states

Material and methods
31 patients treated in Rehabilitation Ward of Hospital in Choszczno from February to March 2007. 16 patients with pain syndrome in the course of osteoarthritis and 15 after injuries of musculoskeletal system were included in the study. The patients filled in the questionnaire containing the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and some questions about functioning, self-evaluation and taking analgesic medicaments.

Results
The average age of the patients – 50.2. BDI at admission: 20.6 (25.5 after injuries and 16.1 with osteoarthritis) and at leaving 9.6 (accordingly 8.3 and 10.9). The percentage of the patients with the BDI over 12: at admission 66.3% (73.3% after injuries and 62% with osteoarthritis) and 25.8% at leaving (20% and 31.2%). The level of the pain in logarithmic pain scale (from 1 to 10) at admission was 6.7, at leaving 3.8 and the decrease after treatment was from 6.9 to 4.2 (osteoarthritis) and from 6.5 to 2.5 (injury). The pain more often than once a day was declared by 38.7% at admission and 6.4% at leaving. 16.1% of the patients at admission and 58.1% of the patients at leaving revealed taking analgesic drugs more often than once a day and many times a day. At admission 80.6% of patients declared average or considerable decrease in functioning and 25.8% at leaving. Quality of life as low or very low during the last week before admission and leaving was declared by 67.8% and 19.4%, Considerable improvement or relief of pain was declared by 70.9% of patients (86.6% after injuries and 43.7% with osteoarthritis). Improvement of QoL after treatment declared 74.2% (86.6% and 50% respectively).
