3/2007Prophylaxis and rehabilitation in painful shoulder syndrome in family doctor’s practice in Bydgoszcz

GRZEGORZ CZERWIŃSKI (Poradnia Rehabilitacyjna NZOZ Przychodnia Rejonowa „Ogrody” w Bydgoszczy;Kierownik: lek. stom. Andrzej Zieliński)

Background
The main causes of painful shoulder syndrome are fractured limbs and microinjuries.

Material and methods
Questionnaires, physical examination and rehabilitation took place in community health centre “Ogrody” in Bydgoszcz City. The patients who complained of pain in shoulder girdle were included in the study.

Results
The survey was carried out among 21 people (aged 34–82, average age 60.81). The group included 16 women (average age 63.5) and 5 men (average age 51.8). Eleven patients who complained of pain as a set of microinjuries claimed that it was another pain in joint of the arm. However ten patients who suffered from an injury after breaking upper limb described it as the pain which appeared for the first time. The largest amplitude was observed: 1) in the position of arm bending to 90 degree which led to decrease in external rotation until 68.59% in comparison with healthy limb, 2) in decrease in range of joint mobility external rotation measured in the arm in abduct position to 90 degree amount to 27.21%. In painful shoulder syndrome the limitation of mobility appeared either abduct or external rotation in the joint of the arm.

Key words: arm, prevention, rehabilitation, health promotion
